Stone Forest 石林

The Stone Forest (石林, Shilin) is exactly what its name promises: a forest of stone. Over 270 million years, an ancient seabed was uplifted, and rain and groundwater dissolved the limestone into a maze of vertical pillars, deep pits, and narrow corridors spread across 400 square kilometers — the largest karst stone forest in the world. The result looks like a petrified city, and the local Sani people (a branch of the Yi minority) have woven it into their legends: the towering figure of Ashima, their heroine, is said to stand forever among the stones. Most visitors start at the Greater Stone Forest (大石林), the dense core where stone pillars crowd together like a labyrinth and walkways thread between them. Follow the stone stairs upward to Wangfeng Pavilion, the highest viewpoint, for the classic sweep of pinnacles against the sky. The Lesser Stone Forest (小石林) to the east is gentler — grass-covered clearings dotted with slender pillars, including the famous Ashima Stone. A shuttle connects the two areas, and a winding bus route reaches the newer Naigu Stone Forest (乃古石林) farther out, a wilder, blacker rock formation that most tour groups skip. The Stone Forest is a half-day to full-day trip from Kunming, 90 minutes by bus or car. Go on a weekday and arrive early: by mid-morning the park fills with tour groups, and by noon the main paths are a procession of umbrellas and selfie sticks. Come before 9 AM and you can have the labyrinth almost to yourself — the stones at dawn, in low golden light, are worth every minute of the early start.
